The View That Changes Everything

Most wedding venues in Portugal are beautiful at ground level. Herdade da Emberiza is beautiful at sky level.

Perched at 160 metres altitude on the slopes of Serra de Montejunto, within a Protected Landscape, this family-owned 25-hectare property offers something almost no other wedding venue in the Lisbon region can: a panoramic view over the Tagus river and the Ribatejo plain stretching as far as the eye can see.

The main house dates to 1932, has been fully restored while preserving its original character, and blends rustic charm with contemporary, minimalist touches. It’s a space that communicates elegance without ostentation the moment you walk in.

As a wedding videographer, Herdade da Emberiza is one of the venues that most challenges (in the best sense) my approach to filming. The scale of the landscape is so impressive that the film needs to breathe, to give the viewer time to absorb the horizon. And that breathing room is what makes films here different from everything else.

The Glass Salon, 360-Degree Cinema

The most distinctive element of the Emberiza is the glass-walled salon with 360° views over the landscape. Climate-controlled, with capacity for approximately 160 guests, this space dissolves the boundary between indoors and outdoors.

For video, this is extraordinary. Instead of filming guests against walls, I film them against the sunset. Toasts happen with the Tagus as background. The first cake cut has the infinite horizon as its backdrop. Every frame is a postcard.

At night, when the interior lights turn on and the glass becomes a mirror, the salon takes on another dimension, reflections create visual compositions that appear studied but are completely natural. It’s the kind of space that does the videographer’s work for them.

The Centuries-Old Olive Trees and Reflecting Pool

Outside, the lawn dotted with centuries-old olive trees is where most outdoor ceremonies take place. The olive trees (with trunks twisted by time) are natural sculptures that frame the couple in an organic, timeless way.

The reflecting pool adds an extra visual layer. On calm days, it mirrors the olive trees and the sky, creating symmetries that on video look almost too perfect to be real. And in the late afternoon, when raking light touches the water’s surface, the effect is of a quiet beauty that no digital effect can match.

The ceremony in this setting (with the Tagus in the background, olive trees framing the natural altar, and the Serra de Montejunto light) is one of the most photogenic and videogenic moments I know in Portugal.

The Curated Experience

Herdade da Emberiza is not a volume venue. It hosts only one event per day, meaning the couple has the entire property exclusively to themselves. For video, this is invaluable, there’s no overlap with other events, no rush to dismantle, and I can explore every corner of the estate without restrictions.

The service is equally thoughtful:

• Wedding planner included on the event day, ensuring logistics flow without the couple worrying
• Menus created by a chef and oenologist, focused on contemporary Portuguese gastronomy, details I always capture in table shots
• Floral decoration frequently by Lili Cherry (Dalila Costa Carrilho), whose natural flower work complements the venue’s organic aesthetic

This attention to detail translates into the film. When every element (food, flowers, space, light) is conceived as a cohesive whole, the video gains a visual harmony that you feel even without being able to explain it.

Mountain Light

Altitude changes the light. At 160 metres, on the slopes of an Atlantic mountain range, the luminous quality differs from what you find in the valley. The air is cleaner, horizons longer, and the transition from afternoon light to sunset is more gradual and dramatic.

For video, this means golden hour lasts longer at the Emberiza than at most lower-altitude venues. I have more time to film couple portraits, more margin to capture the ceremony with that warm, soft light that transforms any image.

And when the sun sets behind Serra de Montejunto and the sky fills with pink tones over the Tagus, the landscape becomes so cinematic that I simply turn on the camera and let nature do the rest.

And when I review the films I’ve captured here, I understand why: this space doesn’t need decoration to be beautiful. It just needs a couple in love and a good camera. The mountain provides the rest.
